GE D-lite+ and Pedi-lite+ Sensors: Choosing a Flow Sensor for Adult and Pediatric Spirometry
Single-use GE respiratory flow sensors for spirometry: D-lite+ (896952) for adults, Pedi-lite+ (8001948) for children. Compatibility with Carescape R860, hygiene, where to buy.
Spirometry and ventilation monitoring are an obligatory part of patient management during general anaesthesia and intensive care. The accuracy of measurements of tidal volume, minute ventilation and lung compliance depends on the quality of the flow sensor installed in the breathing circuit. GE Healthcare offers a line of single-use flow sensors, D-lite+ and Pedi-lite+, which cover the needs of adult and paediatric patients.
In this guide we look at the D-lite+ (PN 896952) and Pedi-lite+ (PN 8001948) sensors — their purpose, differences, selection rules and procurement for clinics in Russia and the CIS.
1. Why D-lite+ and Pedi-lite+ sensors are needed
The flow sensor is installed in the breathing circuit between the Y-connector and the patient. It measures:
- •tidal volume (Vt) and minute ventilation (MV);
- •inspiratory and expiratory flow;
- •the parameters for calculating lung compliance and resistance.
Accurate data allow the anaesthesiologist and intensivist to adjust ventilation parameters in good time and to notice changes in the patient's lung condition.
2. D-lite+ (896952) — adult sensor
PN: 896952
Category: D-lite+ single-use respiratory flow sensor for adult patients.
- •Optimised for adult patient breathing volumes.
- •Provides stable readings in standard and high-flow ventilation.
- •Used simultaneously for gas monitoring and spirometry.
Features:
- •low flow resistance;
- •compatible with GE circuits (verify the adapter);
- •single-use version — eliminates cross-infection.
3. Pedi-lite+ (8001948) — paediatric sensor
PN: 8001948
Category: Pedi-lite+ single-use respiratory flow sensor for children.
- •Designed for the small breathing volumes of children.
- •High sensitivity at low flows — correct readings in newborns and young children.
- •Used in paediatric and neonatal anaesthesiology and intensive care.
Features:
- •small sensor dead space;
- •accurate spirometry at low Vt;
- •single-use version for the protection of small patients.
4. Selection: adult or paediatric sensor
| Criterion | D-lite+ (896952) | Pedi-lite+ (8001948) |
|---|---|---|
| Patients | adults | children, newborns |
| Breathing volumes | standard and high | small (low flows) |
| Sensor dead space | standard | minimal |
| Application | general anaesthesia, ICU | paediatric/neonatal anaesthesia |
Selection rule: do not use an adult sensor for a child — at small volumes the measurement error increases. A paediatric sensor is likewise unacceptable for an adult: it quickly becomes blocked and produces excessive resistance.
5. Infection safety
The D-lite+ and Pedi-lite+ sensors are single-use products. This is the main requirement of infection safety:
- •cross-contamination between patients is excluded;
- •no disinfection between cases is required;
- •the requirements of SanPiN and of internal quality control are met.
Replace the sensor after each patient or in case of visible contamination. Do not attempt to wash and reuse a single-use sensor.
6. Compatibility
| PN | Item | Equipment type | Note |

| 896952 | D-lite+ | Carescape R860, GE spirometry systems | adult circuit |
| 8001948 | Pedi-lite+ | Carescape R860, GE spirometry systems | paediatric circuit |
