The Giraffe OmniBed incubator is one of the most common neonatal convertible incubators in Russian perinatal centers. The combination of a closed incubator and an open resuscitation system helps minimize stress for the newborn during procedures. Like any equipment with an active humidification system and regular access by medical staff, the OmniBed requires periodic replacement of consumable components.

The two most frequently handled part numbers are the humidifier reservoir water collector assembly 6600-0216-850 and the cast access window door 6600-1238-500. Let us look at their purpose, service frequency and typical mistakes.

1. Why these components are needed

6600-0216-850 — humidifier reservoir water collector assembly. It serves to collect the condensate that forms during operation of the active humidifier. Condensate accumulates in the lower part of the reservoir; if it is not drained, water floods the heating element, causing false level sensor trips and a risk of overheating.

6600-1238-500 — cast access window door (GHGI). Through this window, medical staff perform manipulations with the newborn without opening the main incubator hood. Preserving the microclimate inside the chamber (temperature, humidity, sterility) is critical for premature patients with a body weight < 1500 g.

If in doubt, check the serial number of your incubator against the GE service documentation: the GHGI (Giraffe Hybrid Incubator) modification requires exactly door 6600-1238-500, while earlier incubators used a different form factor.

4. Service and replacement

6600-0216-850 — water collector

1. Switch off the humidifier, drain the remaining water from the reservoir.
2. Remove the water collector assembly; the holder slides along the guides without tools.
3. Rinse with sterile distilled water, treat with a quaternary ammonium disinfectant (for example, Incidin Active).
4. Inspect for cracks, cloudiness, deformation. Any of these defects = replacement.
5. Reinstall, fill with sterile distilled water up to the mark.

6600-1238-500 — door

1. Open the incubator hood and secure it.
2. Slide the door retainer and tilt the door open.
3. Detach the hinges and remove the door.
4. Install the new door, fasten the hinges, check that the seal fits properly.
5. Close the door — when installed correctly, the characteristic latch click is heard.

5. Common mistakes

Using tap water. Mineral salts are deposited on the reservoir walls, reduce humidifier efficiency and clog the level sensor. Sterile distilled water only.

No per-shift cleaning. Condensate is an ideal medium for Pseudomonas and other opportunistic infections. Premature patients with an immature immune system are especially vulnerable.

Attempting to reuse a cracked door. A crack = loss of tightness = a drop in temperature and humidity in the chamber. Replacement only.

Confusing 6600-1238-500 with the Panda door. The Panda iRes Warmer uses a completely different door; there is no interchangeability.

Ordering only the door seal. GE does not sell the seal separately. Replacement is only as a complete unit under part number 6600-1238-500.
