Giraffe OmniBed Humidifier Heater 6600-0245-850 — Replacement, Compatibility and Diagnostics
120/230 V humidifier heater assembly 6600-0245-850 for the Giraffe OmniBed / OmniBed Carestation incubator. Fault diagnostics and replacement rules.
An active humidification system is a critical component of the Giraffe OmniBed incubator. In the first days of life, the skin and mucous membranes of premature newborns lose moisture considerably faster than those of full-term infants: at a body weight of 800–1200 g, water loss through the skin can reach 100–200 ml/kg/day. Without sufficient humidification, dehydration, hypernatremia and thermoregulation problems develop.
Heater 6600-0245-850 is the heart of the humidification system. It heats sterile distilled water to the set temperature, ensuring a supply of moisture-saturated gas into the chamber. Failure of the heater means an immediate drop in humidity in the chamber and a risk to the patient.
1. Why the heater is needed
The Giraffe OmniBed humidifier operates on the "bubble-through" principle (passing gas through heated water). Air/oxygen passes through the reservoir with heated water, becomes saturated with moisture to a relative humidity of 80–95 % (depending on the setting) and enters the chamber. Without the heater:
- •Water does not evaporate at the required rate → humidity in the chamber drops to 30–40 %.
- •The temperature of the inhaled gas is below body temperature → the newborn loses heat through breathing.
- •Moisture condenses on the walls of the chamber and on accessories → visibility for medical staff is reduced.

3. Compatibility by incubator model
| Model | Support for 6600-0245-850 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Giraffe OmniBed | Yes | All modifications |
| Giraffe OmniBed Carestation | Yes | All modifications |
| Giraffe Incubator (older line) | No | Different humidifier design |
| Giraffe Warmer | No | No active humidification |
| Panda iRes Warmer | No | Different design |
If in doubt, check the incubator serial number against the GE service documentation: the GHGI and Standard modifications use the same heater 6600-0245-850.
4. Fault diagnostics
Symptom 1: "heater fault" error during self-diagnosis. When switched on, the incubator runs an automatic test of the humidification system. If the test is not passed, check the heater connector (it often oxidizes during prolonged idle periods), then the heater itself.
Symptom 2: actual humidity significantly below the set value. Set 85 %, wait 30 minutes. If the actual humidity does not rise above 40–50 %, the heater is not heating the water to the required temperature.
Symptom 3: the heating disc remains cold. Disconnect the incubator from the patient, switch off the humidifier power, wait 10 minutes. Switch on only the humidifier (without chamber heating). After 5 minutes carefully touch the disc — it should be warm (~40 °C). If it is cold, the heater is faulty.
Symptom 4: repeated fuse blowing. If, after replacing the fuse, it blows again within a few hours, there is a short circuit in the heater. Replacement of the entire assembly only.
5. Replacing the heater
- Disconnect the incubator from the patient, switch it to service mode.
- Switch off the humidifier power.
- Drain the water from the humidifier reservoir (if any remains).
- Disconnect the heater connector from the control board (usually 4-pin, with a retainer).
- Loosen the 2 screws fastening the heater to the humidifier chassis.
- Remove the old heater, install the new 6600-0245-850.
- Tighten the screws, connect the connector (until the retainer clicks).
- Fill with sterile distilled water up to the mark.
- Switch on the humidifier, check heating after 10 minutes.
- Run the incubator self-diagnosis.
6. Common mistakes
Using tap water. Mineral salts are deposited on the heater surface, reduce heat transfer and eventually cause overheating. Sterile distilled water only.
Trying to save on a "compatible" heater. Third-party manufacturers offer analogues 30–50 % cheaper, but they have not passed GE certification. The absence of a thermal fuse or an incorrect calibration tolerance = overheating or, conversely, insufficient heating = a risk for the newborn.
Ignoring the "heater fault" error during self-diagnosis. The device will continue to operate, but humidification is in fact not being performed. Immediate replacement.
Replacing only the fuse in case of repeated blowing. The fuse blows because of a short circuit in the heater. Replacing the fuse without replacing the heater = repeated blowing.
Use in a hard water environment. If in your region the water, even after distillation, contains a lot of minerals (especially in Crimea, the Urals, Kazakhstan) — use only bidistillate or a deionizer for topping up the humidifier.
