GE Respiratory Flow Sensors: 1505-3231-000 (Reusable) and 1505-3231-001 (Single-Use)
The respiratory flow sensor is one of the key measuring components of a ventilator and an anesthesia machine. It measures the gas flow in the breathing circuit and allows the machine to calculate tidal volume, respiratory rate and minute ventilation, as well as to synchronise ventilation with the patient's actions.
In this guide we look at the GE flow sensors 1505-3231-000 (reusable) and 1505-3231-001 (single-use) — their purpose, differences, symptoms of wear, replacement and procurement for clinics in Russia and the CIS. The Datex Ohmeda 2089610-001 family sensor is covered in a separate article (cross-reference below) so as not to duplicate its content.
1. Why a flow sensor is needed
The flow sensor continuously measures the gas flow in the patient circuit. Based on its signal the machine:
- •calculates tidal volume (Vt);
- •monitors minute ventilation (MV);
- •determines the respiratory rate;
- •synchronises ventilation with the patient's actions.
Any error in the sensor affects monitoring and can lead to false alarms or an incorrect assessment of ventilation. That is why the accuracy and correct functioning of the sensor are critical for safety.
2. General design
A typical flow sensor for a breathing circuit consists of:
- A sensing element — measures the flow (hot-wire anemometry or differential pressure).
- A housing/adapter — is built into the patient circuit.
- A connecting cable/connector — connects to the machine.
The sensing element is sensitive to contamination by condensate, moisture and aerosols, which is why water traps (see the D-Fend topic) and filters are used in these systems.
3. Breakdown of the items
3.1. 1505-3231-000 — GE respiratory flow sensor (reusable)
PN: 1505-3231-000
Category: GE respiratory flow sensor, reusable.
- •A reusable flow sensor for the breathing circuit of GE ventilators.
- •Subject to cleaning and disinfection according to the manufacturer's schedule.
- •Requires regular inspection of the sensing element and cable.
- •Selected according to the machine model and the type of circuit/connector.
3.2. 1505-3231-001 — respiratory flow sensor (single-use)
PN: 1505-3231-001
Category: respiratory flow sensor, single-use.
- •A single-use sensor, used for one patient/procedure.
- •Eliminates the risk of cross-infection.
- •Disposed of after use; reuse is not permitted.
- •Selected according to the machine model and the type of circuit/connector.
Important: 1505-3231-000 and 1505-3231-001 are different versions (reusable/single-use). Do not confuse them — clarify which version is used in your department and which one suits your machine.
4. Symptoms of wear or malfunction
- •Inaccurate tidal volume and minute ventilation readings.
- •Gas leak (if the adapter housing is damaged).
- •Frequent false «low/high ventilation» alarms.
- •An unstable or «floating» flow signal.
- •A calibration/self-test error of the sensor.
5. Diagnostics: sensor or circuit?
Before replacing the sensor, rule out circuit problems:
- Check the integrity of the breathing circuit and seals, and that there are no kinks.
- Make sure the condensate collector is not full and is not blocking the circuit.
- Check the filters for contamination.
- If the flow is unstable with a serviceable circuit, wear of sensor 1505-3231-000/-001 is likely.
6. How to replace the flow sensor
- Disconnect the machine from the mains and gas, and depressurise the circuit.
- Disconnect the old sensor from the circuit and from the machine connector.
- Install the new sensor (1505-3231-000 or 1505-3231-001) and secure the connector.
- For the single-use version, use a new sensor for each procedure/patient.
- Run the self-test and, if necessary, calibrate the machine.
7. Care and prevention
- •Use filters and water traps to protect the sensing element.
- •Prevent condensate from entering the connector.
- •For the reusable version, clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- •Monitor the integrity of the connection cable.
8. Compatibility table
| PN | Item | Equipment type | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1505-3231-000 | respiratory flow sensor (reusable) | GE ventilators | verify the model and connector |
| 1505-3231-001 | respiratory flow sensor (single-use) | GE ventilators | single use; verify the model |
Exact compatibility depends on the platform. Before ordering, send the device model to the engineer.
9. Difference from the Datex Ohmeda 2089610-001 sensor
Sensor 2089610-001 belongs to the Datex Ohmeda flow sensor family and is described in detail in a separate article, `ge-datex-flow-sensor-2089610-guide`. This article covers GE flow sensors 1505-3231-000/-001 — a different family. Do not choose at random: always verify compatibility with your machine model.
10. Common mistakes
- •Buying without the machine model. Flow sensors are tied to the platform and connector.
- •Confusing 1505-3231 with 2089610-001. These are different families.
- •Ignoring contamination. A blocked sensor produces false data — clean or replace it.
- •Replacing without diagnosing the circuit. First rule out leaks and trap problems.
- •Reusing a single-use sensor. Risk of infection and measurement errors.
