GE LightSpeed and BrightSpeed CT: Gantry Errors, Lasers and Tube Warm-Up — Diagnostics by Logs
Short answer
On GE LightSpeed and BrightSpeed scanners the failure is usually localized: it is either the gantry subsystem (lasers, positioning the tube to the home position, the "C-pulse" error), or tube warm-up and calibration, or the boot subsystem (hard disk and optical drive). Reinstalling the system in such cases usually brings no result — hardware and connections are checked first. Below is an analysis of real service engineer requests on a medical technicians' forum and the diagnostic sequence that follows from them.
1. Why LightSpeed and BrightSpeed produce "floating" errors
In a medical technicians' forum thread devoted to the GE CT/e CT scanner and other units of this line, an engineer describes the typical picture as follows:
"I service light speed, bright speed, GE CTs. They all started glitching at boot, errors are different, I can't pin down this or that. You reboot — they work normally."
"Floating" errors at boot are a classic sign that the problem is not a single "burnt-out module" but the state of connections and the computing path: board contacts, connectors, power, electronics cooling, disk condition. That is why diagnostics do not start with replacing expensive units, but with inspecting the reconstruction computer itself.
It is telling how the same story ended:
"with the light speed unit the problem was solved by disassembling and cleaning the reconstruction computer."
That is, the symptom "the CT boots strangely" was removed by cleaning and reworking the computing unit — without replacing the tube, detector or generator.
2. Gantry error: lasers do not turn on, "C-pulse" in the log
The second case in the same thread is a BrightSpeed 16:
"Gantry error, when the gantry lasers start the gantry spins, but the lasers do not turn on. The emitters themselves are working (when switched on manually via the toggle on the board they work). The log shows the error "C - pulse". We checked all the fuses."
The key detail here is the phrase "the emitters themselves are working". In the same discussion a colleague explains what this code means:
"The C-pulse is needed for precise positioning of the X-ray tube in the home position; physically it is a photodetector and a rotating shutter, it is adjustable."
Hence the practical conclusion: the "C-pulse" code points first of all to the position sensor and shutter (and their adjustment), not to the laser itself. Replacing "lasers" before checking the sensor, the shutter, their seating and adjustment is a typical budget overrun.
Further in the same thread there are messages linking the gantry to data exchange:
"in the logs the message could not read tgp data from gantry data server… The unit does not reach operating mode, warm-up and FastCal do not pass. Message: retry RX, gantry hardware problem."
The logic here matters: "retry RX" and complaints about the gantry data server are communication between the gantry and the system, not rotation mechanics. Therefore the checking order is: connectors and cables of the gantry data channel → power to the unit → only then mechanics and emitters.
3. The tube does not warm up and air calibration is interrupted
A separate group of symptoms is tube warm-up and calibration. An example from the thread:
"after two power surges… the unit boots, the tube does not warm up, they start scanning and a second later it stops and nothing happens."
And another case, with the same meaning, on a BrightSpeed 16:
"the message "cannot continue with user request due to a system level error / Calibration is aborted / Call service"… during the start of air calibration."
Note: the same external symptom "does not warm up / calibration is interrupted" can stand behind different causes — from the consequences of power surges to the actual thermal state of the tube and the cooling circuit. That is why the log is searched for exactly the operation at which the interruption occurred: warm-up, FastCal or air calibration. The break point almost always points to the unit to be checked.
The checking order for such symptoms:
- Service log: time and result of the last successful calibration, codes of the last attempt.
- Thermal state of the tube and the cooling system: flow, flow rate, temperature.
- Tube power and the high-voltage section.
- Only after that — a conclusion about the tube's remaining life and the need for replacement.
4. Boot, DVD and system disk
In the same thread there is also a "household" case that is often underestimated:
"the DVD died, we bought a new one of the same brand and the same series, but it still does not work, the technicians say it has to be registered in the system."
The conclusion is simple: on this platform part of the system peripherals is not "plug and play". If after replacing a unit the system does not see it, the issue is not the unit itself but the configuration. By the same logic, reinstalling the system "just in case" without working on the hardware is wasted time: in the cases analyzed it was the reworking and cleaning that helped, not the reinstallation.
Practical boot checklist:
- •Check the condition and speed of the disks, and the absence of write errors.
- •Check the power and connectors of the reconstruction computer.
- •Make sure the replaced peripheral is correctly recognized by the system.
- •And only then consider reinstalling the image.
5. Table: symptom → unit → what is checked
| Symptom | Probable unit | What is checked first |
|---|---|---|
| "Floating" errors at boot | Reconstruction computer, connections | Reworking, cleaning, board and connector contacts |
| Gantry lasers do not turn on, "C-pulse" | Home position sensor and shutter | Sensor, shutter, their adjustment |
| "could not read tgp data from gantry data server", "retry RX" | Gantry data channel | Connectors, cables, unit power |
| Tube does not warm up, FastCal does not pass | Tube, cooling, power | Log of the break, thermal state, cooling flow |
| Air calibration is interrupted | Tube / generator / log | Break point in the log, temperature, power |
| Replaced drive or board "is not seen" | System configuration | Device recognition, configuration |
6. Which catalog tubes apply here

7. Prevention: what reduces the frequency of such requests
- •Power: a unit without a quality UPS transfers mains surges "into the electronics". One of the cases analyzed begins precisely after two power surges.
- •Thermal conditions: monitor the temperature and flow of the cooling circuit, and the condition of the filters.
- •Dryness and cleanliness: ventilation of the reconstruction computer and the condition of the connectors give an effect that is visible immediately.
- •Logs: save the service logs after every intervention — they make recovery after the next failure many times faster.
- •Tube life: plan replacement in advance, without waiting for a complete failure of the unit.
8. How to read a GE CT service log
The service log on this platform is not "text for the engineer" but a working document that shows the chronology of the failure. The practical reading order:
- •Look at the last successful operation. If the last successful calibration was a month ago and afterwards the unit "sometimes" failed the tests, this is a developing defect, not a one-off fault.
- •Look for the first error in the chain. The rest of the log contains consequences: one hardware error often pulls five messages about tests and calibrations behind it.
- •Match the code to the subsystem. Gantry, detector, tube, generator and disk codes belong to different units, and they cannot be treated with a single action.
- •Record the time. Correlating the time of the errors with the time of power surges, outages and work in the room often gives the answer immediately.
It is important to save the log before any interventions: after a reboot and tests the history is partially overwritten, and the original picture can no longer be restored.
9. What to prepare before contacting us
So that diagnostics do not drag on, the request should include: the scanner model and serial number, the system version, the saved log, a brief description of the symptom with its frequency (for example, "error on the first boot out of three"), and the PN of the installed tube. These data remove half of the clarifying questions and allow us to get straight to the point.
10. Practical minimum of power-related prevention
The quality of the power supply deserves separate emphasis. One of the cases analyzed begins with two power surges — and ends with a failure of tube warm-up. For CT this is not rare: the scanner draws a lot, and switching interference in the mains directly affects the electronics. Power quality control (including a correctly sized UPS) is the cheapest prevention available.
11. Spare parts and ordering
MediAccessori is an independent supplier of spare parts and consumables for medical equipment. On this topic, tubes MX135/DA135, MX165/DA165, MX200/DA200 and Performix 40 are available (10 pcs. each in stock), as well as related catalog items.
